Update: Upgraded to iPhone iOS4 this morning, early thoughts

Upgrading my 3GS to iOS4 earlier today. Slowly trying to figure out what has changed and what hasn’t. What I know so far:

  • my home screen background switch to whatever I had setup as my wallpaper
  • Folders appeared – I like this feature a lot.  Nice to be able to group apps and cut down on pages
  • The Mail – looks like my Gmail is now setup like my exchange account.  You can have multiple exchange accounts and calendars.  Really like this.  Still wish I could merge my contacts somehow and have them all the same.

Thats it for now, hope to have a full rundown later.

Update:  Looks like it is bringing all my contacts together from Gmail and Exchange.  Only had a couple of multiple entries when I looked at all contacts.  This is a great add.

Nothing to Do With Music

This has absolutely nothing to do with music, but had to post it anyway.  My son has really taken to dirt bikes as seen below.  Just 6 years old and pushing his Honda CRF50 to the limits.  You just gotta love being young!

Modern Day Heroes

On Sunday our church will recognize to young ladies that will be going into the mission field.  Both of these girls are simply amazing, they have truly given their life to Christ and are following his example.  Both are college graduates, both had lots of career opportunities, but both have set all these things aside to go to the world and spread the message of Christ.

I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be the parent of one of these two.  To see your daughter grow and devote themselves to the spread of the gospel in a foreign land.  Man that is amazing, and must also be extremely stressful.  Margaret is headed to Laos and Sarah is headed to the Philippines.  Both are going as self supported missionaries.

Just to think our church has been around for well over a 100 years, and we have had many surrender to the ministry, but I don’t believe we have ever had to surrender to become missionaries.  These guys truly are modern day heroes.

The Least of the These Matthew 25

My wife was checking out some blog sites this week and reminded me of this scripture in Matthew 25.  Really powerful stuff when you think about it.  How often do we turn our back on Jesus?  Are you a sheep or a goat?  Reminded me of a great song by Decemberadio – Least of These and this great video on YouTube.

31 “When the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on the throne of His glory. 32 All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate them one from another, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on His right, and the goats on the left. 34 Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

35 For I was hungry

and you gave Me something to eat;

I was thirsty

and you gave Me something to drink;

I was a stranger and you took Me in;

36 I was naked and you clothed Me;

I was sick and you took care of Me;

I was in prison and you visited Me.  ’

37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or without clothes and clothe You? 39 When did we see You sick, or in prison, and visit You?’

40 “And the King will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you did for Me. ’ 41 Then He will also say to those on the left, ‘Depart from Me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the Devil and his angels!

42 For I was hungry

and you gave Me nothing to eat;

I was thirsty

and you gave Me nothing to drink;

43 I was a stranger

and you didn’t take Me in;

I was naked

and you didn’t clothe Me,

sick and in prison

and you didn’t take care of Me.’

44 “Then they too will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or without clothes, or sick, or in prison, and not help You?’

45 “Then He will answer them, ‘I assure you: Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me either.  ’

46 “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”

I know I feel like I am called to do so much more, but yet I continue on complacently with my life.  Reading scripture like this makes me wonder why?  Why am I just setting here doing nothing?  Nothing to share God’s love, nothing to help those in need?  Maybe I am doing more than I realize, but I shouldn’t be content.  I am making it a point in my life to do more.

My wife and I recently purchased Mother’s Day gifts (Uganda Necklaces) from 147 Million Orphans.  I know this isn’t much, but its a start.  We have a great team leaving our church in just a few days headed to the Philippines, and I am praying for their trip.  I hope they are able to show God’s love to someone that has never seen it.  I hope that one day our church is able to send multiple groups of people out to world to show God’s love, and I hope that one of them is me.  I encourage everyone to find something, someone, anyone they can reach out to and show God’s love.  I am so thankful that I have a wife with a heart that is full of love for everyone but herself.  I hope that I can be that unselfish myself.

Christian Music Tabs/Chord Charts

I know we all have our favorite tab sites, but sometimes we Google a song and come up empty. Sometimes we find a chart that just doesn’t seem to be exactly right. If you find this to be the case, you might want to try the artist or songwriters website. I know a lot of popular Christian bands and songwriters actually put their chord charts/lyrics online. What better place to get a chart than from the actual songwriter or performer.  Here are a few of my favorites that have their songs online:

I am sure there are many more out there, these are just a few of the artist that I know put their chord charts online.  Feel free to comment with others that do the same.

A great look at the Nashville number system

This article was written by nvsongwriter

Learn the Nashville Number System

The Nashville Number system is the greatest thing ever invented for the working musician. The principles are basically the same. There are some differences but I will point those out as we go along.

When Neil Matthews created the original Nashville Number System in the late 1950’s, he was looking for a way to help he and the other members of the Jordanaires, Elvis Presley’s Vocal Backup Group, learn vocal parts more quickly. Charlie McCoy, A Nashville session musician and music leader of the Hee Haw television show, took what Matthews created and, together with some of his recording session friends came up with the system musicians use today.

For musicians, the Nashville Number System is a chord charting system that makes charting and transposing keys easier and quicker. With this system, the scale degrees of the major scale, C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C, are changed to numbers. The major scale using the Nashville Number System would be 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8.

In the last lesson, I talked about half steps and whole steps and how in certain orders, I call formulas, can be used to create chords and scales. If you will remember, the formula for the major scale traditionally is whole step, whole step, half step, then 3 more whole steps and another half step, sometimes noted W-W-H-W-W-W-H. I also said in my Guitar Number System we will note it with numbers, 2-2-1-2-2-2-1. You can in turn, use this formula to create the major scale in any key.

This numerical approach to music is the language professional musicians use to communicate everyday in Nashville and other music centers live and in the recording studio. Studio musicians will listen to a demo recording of the song to be recorded and write out their own number chart as the sound engineer plays it from the control room. Then they record the song, each creating their part based on the number chart the just made. All the parts we hear in the music we love is created this way, right there on the spot. There are no pieces of paper with lines and little black notes on them. It’s all done with number charts.

A number chart for the Bob Segar classic “Old Time Rock and Roll” would look like this:

1 1 4 4
5 5 1 5
1 1 4 4
5 5 1 5

Awaken 2010

Well Awaken 2010 has come and gone, and it has taken me a couple of days to get my head back together and get a good nights sleep.  Man what a night, what a day.  Got to the venue about 10:00 am and left about 1:00 am, man I am glad I don’t do that every weekend.  First, I need to say thanks to so many people that made this happen.  I can’t list them all, but you know who you are.  This event couldn’t have been a success without so many great volunteers.  No we didn’t have a sell out crowd, but the event was a success!  We had some great bands and a great night of worship.  For those of you who bought tickets and didn’t make it, you really missed out.  Just ask anyone who was there.  Would I do it again?  Yes, definitely.  There is no doubt in my mind that we were supposed to do this.  Sure I wish it would have been a packed house but the 5 or 600 that saw the event got a blessing.  There is no doubt we learned a lot.  Sure we made some mistakes, but we will know a lot more about what to do next year.  The most important thing we saw was that doing something like this takes a tremendous amount of time and effort.  Getting it together in three weeks was difficult but not impossible.  Next year we will take about 3 months to put it together.  Secondly we won’t plan the event the night of the Gum Tree or college graduation.  We will definitely double check to see what is going on before we set a date.  Of course we choose May 8th for a specific reason, and I don’t regret that at all.

I must say a big thank you to the bands that came:  Shane & Shane, Brenton Brown, The Glorious Unseen, Northstar, Notus, and Cross-Eyed.  From the pre-show to the finale everyone was great.  We got a little late start with sound check running long, but everything came together great.  It was amazing to get to be around so many great Christian artists.  And I picked up a few little tips and tricks along the way.  Even joined Cross-Eyed on the stage to play a few songs.  It was nice to be able to crank up the Vox for a change.

Thanks to Gary Permenter!  He did a great job.  If you are looking for a speaker, you need to check this guy out.  Not only is a very funny, but he is great man of God.

Another big THANK YOU to everyone from ICC who helped make this event possible.  You guys are great and made this a first class event.  This wouldn’t have been possible without you.  The Davis Event Center is a awesome venue for any concert.  I can’t believe more people haven’t made use of it.

And last but definitely not least, Thank You God.  Without you none of this would be possible.  You make all things good and you definitely had a big hand in this event.  THANK YOU

I hope to get some event pics and videos added later today so check back often.
